Six Looks, Purely on Film: Photographing Gina Knox in Place Vendôme, Paris
As a Paris fashion editorial photographer who works almost exclusively in film photography, sessions like this one are where I feel most in my element. This wasn't a traditional studio editorial. It was closer to paparazzi-style street style, Gina's vision was candid, unposed-looking, walking shots caught mid-stride, but with real direction behind the camera. I choreographed the movement, called the angles, and picked our marks around Place Vendôme's arcades and jewelry storefronts, while Gina brought the attitude and the wardrobe. The result reads like a fashion week street style feature, but it was entirely intentional from first frame to last.
There's a particular kind of magic that happens when you photograph fashion on film in the middle of Place Vendôme, before the city has fully woken up. Every outfit in this film photography session was chosen to hold its own against the architecture of Place Vendôme.
I have to be honest and say that the Schiaparelli red dress was the anchor look of the day. A sculptural red gown paired with Schiaparelli's now-iconic tape heels, worn against the pale stone of the square, created the kind of color contrast that was very high fashion, and it photographed even better on film, where reds render with a warmth and depth that digital sensors tend to flatten.
Accessories did as much storytelling as the clothes. Gina carried her red Schiaparelli face bag, a surrealist red bag with the gold nose, lips, and eyes, a piece so directly tied to the house's visual language that it became a focal point of its own in several frames. Alongside it, her Schiaparelli hand-in-hand diamond clutch made an appearance, its sculptural jeweled hands (in hand) adding a moment of drama to the quieter, more editorial shots. Even more special that we got some of these photographs of the pieces right in front of the Maison in Paris.
And for Gina's ivory tailored suit, a sleeveless blazer and matching trousers, Gina carried a vintage Louis Vuitton Speedy, its worn leather handles and patina doing exactly what vintage pieces do best: grounding a very polished outfit in something lived-in and personal. And in the look with the grey wide-leg trousers and printed silk headscarf, her Fendi Peekaboo made its appearance, that flash of green lining visible through the bag's signature open silhouette — a small detail, but the kind of thing film loves to catch in soft, dimensional color.

Why Shoot a Paris Fashion Photoshoot Entirely on Film
I get asked constantly why I insist on film for editorial and street style work, especially when speed and convenience so clearly favor digital. The honest answer: nothing else captures Paris or fashion, quite the way film does.
Film photography has a way of softening a scene and its tones without losing its structure. The stone of Place Vendôme doesn't turn flat and grey the way it can on a digital sensor, the film photography tones have warmth, texture, a kind of patina that mirrors the patina of the city itself. Skin tones render more naturally. Reds, like that Schiaparelli dress, don't blow out or go plasticky; they stay rich and true. Shooting Fashion Street Style in Place Vendôme
Place Vendôme is one of the most photogenic, and most challenging, locations in Paris to shoot in. It's a working square, framed by maisons like Cartier, Bvlgari, and the Ritz, with real traffic, real tourists, and very little patience for anyone blocking a storefront for too long. Working here as a Paris fashion week photographer means moving fast, reading the light constantly, and having your compositions half-planned before you even lift the camera.
For this Paris fashion photography session, we leaned into that energy rather than fighting it. Instead of static posed portraits, we walked. Gina moved through the square as if she were simply going somewhere, and I worked around her, catching her mid-turn near the Vendôme column, framing her small against the scale of the buildings, letting a passing car's headlights blur into the background of one wide shot. That's the paparazzi-style street-style approach: candid in feel, but with a Paris film photographer very deliberately choosing every frame, every angle, every moment to release the shutter.
It's a style that photographs beautifully on film specifically because film rewards patience and intention over volume. There's no machine-gunning a hundred frames hoping one works.
